History

Jean Childs Young Middle School in Atlanta GA, was founded in 1901 as the first public middle school for African American students. The school was named after Jean Childs Young, a prominent African American educator and leader; her husband, Alexander A. Lawrence; and their son, Thomas W. Lawrence.

The original building of what is now Jean Childs Young Middle School was located on Auburn Avenue in downtown Atlanta and housed classrooms for elementary through high school age students. In 1949, the school moved to its current location at 1025 Sheridan Road NW where it stands today. The new building featured a cafeteria, auditorium and other modern amenities that had not been available at the previous location.

In 1951, Dr. Lucile M. Brown became principal of Jean Childs Young, making her the first female African American principal in Georgia. Under Dr. Brown’s leadership, the school developed a rigorous curriculum that included college preparatory classes, foreign language courses and art electives.
